Our Religious Family Events 2006-2007
And the word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us (Jn 1:14).

St. George Goes to Rome

This year the Church of St. George in Bridgeport, Connecticut is celebrating its 100th Year Anniversary. To celebrate and give thanks Fr. Julio Lopresti, the pastor of St. George's, three of the sisters serving at the parish and 20 members of the parish community went on a pilgrimage to Rome, Italy from November 4th - November 12th. The pilgrims themselves came from a diverse variety of backgrounds reflect the story of St. George's past 100 years, among them: Lithuanian, Colombian, Puerto Rican, and Guatemalan heritage.   While in Rome the group traveled to the tombs of Sts. Peter & Paul and to the Church of St. George, as well as many other amazing stops. In each place they gave thanks for all the graces that have been bestowed upon the thousands and thousands of parishioners from St. George's over the past 100 years. Likewise they implored the continued intercession of the Church Triumphant for the Parishioners of today and all of their spiritual and material needs. St. George, pray for us!

California Kids Celebrate All Saints Day

The catechism children at Our Lady of Peace enjoyed a special treat on Saturday November 4, 2007: an All Saints Day Celebration.   . The children were invited to dress as their favorite saint, to form a Rosary Procession around the Shrine, and to participate in a special Mass celebrated by Father Walter Mallo. There were prizes for the best costumes as well as for the class with the most “saints.” We continue to pray for the holiness of our catechism children, that through the intercession of all the saints, they may continue to grow in the love of Christ.

 Third Order Meeting in November
Charity was the theme of this month’s Third Order meeting. Many families came to join our traditional potluck dinner and then stay for the talks to deepen their experience of sharing in our IVE spirituality. Sister Maria Auxiliadora presented a brief power-point presentation about the Pro-Life March in Washington and Walk for Life in San Francisco as well as a World Youth Day ’08 video clip about the Pope's exciting trip to Sydney, Australia. Mother Ana de Jesus and Sister Angeles then presented the talks about charity. After the talks we celebrated the birthday of Karen Ruiz, the president of the Third Order at Our Lady of Peace. We continue to pray for the spirit of family essential to our charism and for the members of our Third Order, that Christ may draw all souls to Himself.

News from the Third Order in Santa Clara, California: May and June Meetings
Could you not watch with me for one hour?” With this question of Jesus in mind, we celebrated the Anniversary of 31 Years of Perpetual Adoration at Our Lady of Peace on Sunday October 21, 2007.  To give thanks for these years of Adoration, Father Walter Mallo preached at a special Anniversary Mass which was followed by a luncheon for all the dedicated adorers. At the reception, two video clips were shown of Monsignor John Sweeny, the late pastor who began Perpetual Adoration at our parish,  speaking on EWTN with Mother Angelica in the 1980’s.  A power-point presentation on Eucharistic miracles followed.  Finally, the captains and adorers received special prizes in thanksgiving for all their dedication to our Lord present in the Eucharist. We give thanks for these 31 years of Adoration and ask Our Lady to continue to bless our parish and bring more souls to our Lord, hidden in the Eucharist.

Confirmation Girls Retreat
Nearly forty girls preparing for Confirmation gathered from Saint Leo the Great and Our Lady of Peace for their first retreat of the year. We had the great grace to hold the retreat at a local Byzantine Catholic Church. The pastor, Father Anthony Hernandez, was overjoyed to host us. He took the opportunity to explain the differences between the Eastern and Western rites, as well as the meaning of the many icons since for many, it was their first time in a Byzantine church. Prayer, sports, Holy Mass, confession, and talks filled their day. Father Anthony Hernandez and Sister Maria de los Angeles gave talks on “The Meaning of Life” and “How to Attain Holiness.” We pray for the the sanctification and perseverance of our Confirmation students.

The Craft Fair
During the weekend of October 27, 2007 the Altar Society held a Craft Fair in the gym of the Family Learning Center. Our IVE Sewing Group at Our Lady of Peace, in their generosity, worked very hard for several months before this event knitting and crocheting scarves, baby clothes, doilies, and much more to sell at the Craft fair. The Sewing Group’s main objective was to raise money for the Monastery of our cloistered contemplative sisters in Argentina. We thank God for giving us such generous members of the Sewing Group and ask Our Lady to grant every grace that God desires for them.

  IVE Third Order Meeting
The September Meeting of our Third Order held Saturday, October 6, 2007 discussed “The Place of the Pope in our Constitutions." After our potluck dinner, we watched the first part of the DVD series “Discovering the Vatican.” Entitled “The Tomb on the Hill” this section explained the history of the burial places of Saint Peter and how the Vatican is structured to entomb the deceased Holy Fathers. Afterwards, Mother Ana de Jesus and Father Walter Mallo spoke of the Holy Father in the light of our Constitutions. In particular, the talks explained how a great love for the successor of Peter must be part of the spirituality of our entire Religious Family.  Also the talk explained how Father Buela, our founder, recognizes Pope John Paul II as truly the spiritual father of our congregation, born under his pontificate. May Our Lady continue to bless our Third Order with many faithful members united in the Incarnate Word.

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary/Pro-Life Chain

To commemorate the Feast Day of the Holy Rosary, we had a special Rosary procession for world peace after the noon Mass on Sunday October 7, 2007. Members of the Third Order, Knights of Columbus, Legion of Mary, and our catechism children carried flags from different countries around the world, and wooden crosses with the names of the fifty states. Father Walter Mallo led the Holy Rosary and dedicated each mystery to praying for peace in specific countries and states.  Many people participated in imploring peace for the world.  The 7th was also Pro-Life Sunday during which we participated in the Pro-Life Chain on a busy intersection in San Jose. We prayed the Holy Rosary to end the violence of abortion and bring peace to those who have already experienced the trauma of abortion. May Our Lady, Queen of Peace and Comforter of the Afflicted, intercede for us as we continue to be the instruments of peace and voices for the most forgotten.

Benefit Concert
On October 7th in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, the sisters of the Houses of Formation held a benefit concert to support the need for a permanent property to house our growing number of vocations.  Jessica Swink, the international-known soprano, graciously shared her musical talents with all those gathered at the St. Francis Hall in Washington, D.C. Accompanied by her sister Colleen Swink on the violin and by her friend and pianist Edward Rogers, Ms. Swink dedicated her repertoire to Our Blessed Mother with songs by Mozart, Schubert, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and others.

Among the many guests who attended the benefit concert we were especially grateful for the presence of His Eminence Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, retired Archbishop of Washington, D.C. At the beginning of the afternoon's concert, Cardinal McCarrick shared some beautiful memories of his own experiences with both the sisters and priests of our Religious Family.  He encouraged the guests to pray for the work of our sisters and to support vocations in the Church.

To the audience of nearly 150 people, the sisters gave a presentation on the charism and work of the Institute around the world and particularly here in the United States.  The presentation also highlighted importance of the 7th of October for us since it marked the 36th anniversary of priestly ordination of Fr. Carlos Miguel Buela, our Founder.  Finally the presentation concluded with a petition for help in our effort to purchase a property suitable to serve as a permanent residence for the growing number of new vocations.

We continue to pray for the fruits of this benefit concert and ask for the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Joseph in order to obtain a permanent house of formation for our sisters in the United States. With a growing number of women entering the Institute every year, the "vocation crisis" we are experiencing is a lack of space to receive them all. For anyone wishing to contribute to support this need, checks may be made payable to "Servants of the Lord" and mailed to 28 15th Street SE Washington, DC 20003 with a note specifying your support for the formation house need.  To learn more about this need for a permanent property for our formation houses please feel free to contact us at jun.ihm@servidoras.org.

Profession of Vows at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan

"In the evening of this life, I shall appear before You with empty hands, for I do not ask You, Lord, to count my works...I wish, then, to be clothed in Your own justice and to receive from Your love the eternal possession of Yourself." -St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Photo Gallery

On the Feast of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, October 1, 2007, Sr. Marie de la Trinité Siopongco made her perpetual vows, ten novices made their first profession, and Juniorate sisters renewed their vows during a solemn Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. Sisters, family, and friends came from all over the country for the Mass which was presided over by Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE the Provincial Superior of the Institute of the Incarnate Word. Also the time and place were very special to all the sisters since not only is New York the seat of the Provincial House of our community, but St. Thérèse is the Co-Patroness of the Foreign Missions and has been a very dear companion for many in their discernment of the religious vocation. We rejoice that once again God has shown His love and mercy by drawing souls to the consecrated life as Spouses of the Incarnate Word.  In the midst of the modern world, may these sisters never cease to proclaim with their lives that God is Love! DEUS CARITAS EST!

Final Profession of Vows in California

During the Holy Mass of the Triumph of the Cross at Our Lady of Peace in Santa Clara California, Sister Maria Ng Krus Totanes, SSVM professed perpetual vows of poverty, manifesting that Christ is her only wealth, chastity for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, and obedience, even unto death on a cross.  Father Gustavo Nieto, IVE, the Provincial Superior of the Incarnate Word, offered a beautiful homily reflecting on the beauty of virginity and the great gift it gives to the Universal Church. We were very grateful to have Fathers Walter Mallo, IVE and Jeff Obniski, IVE, concelebrating and Father Marcelo Navarro serving as Master of Ceremonies. After Holy Communion, three people were formally received into the Third Order of the Incarnate Word while also consecrated themselves to Mary. Nearly twenty children of Third Order families were also invested with the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

In the reception that followed, many groups from the parish collaborated  to make it a truly beautiful and memorable day. We continued the celebration with some songs and jokes, and ended with a song to Our Lady thanking her for all the graces we had received. We pray for Sister Ng Krus asking Our Lady of Perpetual Help to keep her faithful to the vows she made to her Divine Spouse.

2nd Annual Fundraising Dinner at Our Lady of Peace
During the past month in preparation for the Second Annual Fundraising Dinner, members of the Third Order have been promoting this event and accepting donations for the missions after all our Masses.  Finally on Saturday, September 22nd, an estimated three hundred people gathered in the gym which had been magnificently transformed to resemble an elegant restaurant, complete with waiters and waitresses from our IVE Saint Monica Spanish group.  The four beneficiary missions this year were: Guyana, Ecuador, and the Peruvian missions of Camaná and Cotahuasi.  Between various musical performances,  Father Walter Mallo, Sister Maria de los Angeles, and Sister Maria Madre Inmaculada gave brief presentations explaining how each mission would benefit from our fundraising. We ask God to bless all the donors and organizers for their generosity as they work and pray for the missions in Guyana, Ecuador and Peru.

Exaltation of the Cross 2007

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross,  September 14th, was celebrated by the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará worldwide as the feast day in honor of the Cross of Matará.

This year there were celebrations throughout the Province: Sr. Maria Ng Krus Totanes professed her perpetual vows at Our Lady of Peace in Santa Clara, California; Sr. Mary of the Assumption Binyahan (missionary in pro-life apostolate in Washington, DC) and Sr. Maria Jerosolimitana Espiritu (missionary in Toronto, Canada) professed their perpetual vows in the Philippines, their home country;

Sr. Mary of the Annunciation Dinkel and Sr. Maria Esperanza de la Iglesia Rosales were received into the cloister as new contemplative sisters at the Monastery of St. Edith Stein in Brooklyn, New York; and in Washington DC, three sisters renewed their vows in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.  All of the sisters thank our Lord and the Virgin of Matará for the many graces we have received and with joy we congratulate the new perpetually professed sisters: Veni, Sponsa Christi!

California's Catechetical Day

On Saturday September 15th, the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, seventy catechists of Our Lady of Peace (Santa Clara) and Saint Leo the Great (San Jose) participated in the Second Annual West Coast IVE Catechetical Congress. The day included Morning Prayer, three parallel workshops offered in English and Spanish, Holy Mass, and meals together. The first talk, entitled “The Top 10 Questions Every Catechist Should Know How to Answer” dealt with common apologetic questions, such as “why do I need to confess to a priest?” and “why is missing Mass a mortal sin?”  Following Mass and lunch, the second talk, “Catechetical Methodology,” explained the structure of a catechism class and equipped the catechists with concrete aids for time management in the classroom. In the last workshop the catechists and their assistants put into practice the methodology they learned earlier in the day by planning classes together with consultations and advice available from the day's speakers.
We ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to give our catechists the grace to always be true witnesses of the Gospel.

5th Annual IVE Catechetical Conference in Up-State New York

Nearly 70 Catechists from parishes throughout the Province of the Immaculate Conception spent the weekend of September 7th-9th at the IVE St. Patrick Retreat House.  During the weekend, talks were given in both English and Spanish about teaching catechism at a practical level to children and youth.

The weekend also included parish catechetical team meetings which helped the catechists and Directors of Religious Education learn how to work better together and gave them time to develop schedules and to plan retreats, meetings, activities, etc. for the upcoming year.

There were also many other opportunities to build fellowship and community including sports and games, singing and entertainment, and meals together (we were very grateful for all the help and generosity of the youth from the local parishes).

And finally most importantly the weekend began and ended with the Holy Mass. We thank God for this time of growth and offer the upcoming catechetical year to Our Lady.

California Summer Oratory 2007

From July 2nd until July 20th, Our Lady of Peace's 5th Annual Summer Oratory hosted 496 children and youth for three weeks. Novices, postulants, and professed sisters came from Maryland to California to help with the oratory. The children were divided into four age groups of girls and boys. These groups had the opportunity to play sports and compete amongst each other, practicing the virtues of patience, fortitude, and joy. The daily schedule included: talks, games, Holy Mass, silent Bible reading (based on the talk in the morning), Rosary procession around the Shrine, songs. Towards the end of the oratory, we had a visit from Bishop Patrick McGraw. During his homily, Bishop McGraw recounted his own vocation story and encouraged all present to be open to whatever God’s will had in store for you. After Holy Mass, he visited the gym to the delight of all the oratory members, and admired the special welcome signs made by the different age groups. During the last day, we invited the families of the kids to come and enjoy a hot dog lunch with their children and take part in the awards ceremony. We thank God for the success of the Summer Oratory, and ask Our Lady to continue to lead her little ones to the Heart of her Son.

Third Order Meeting

On Saturday August 4th, we had our monthly Third Order meeting at Our Lady of Peace. Members of the Third Order, as well as many families and friends, joined us for a traditional potluck dinner and to share in the IVE spirituality. As dinner was ending, Sister Angeles introduced the countries which will benefit from our fundraising dinner to take place in September: Guyana, Peru, and Ecuador. Father Walter Mallo then showed pictures and explained what happened during the IVE General Chapter. The theme of this night’s talk was Consecration to Mary, taken from Saint Luis de Montfort presented in English by Father Walter Mallo and in Spanish by Father Rolando Santoianni. As the parents listened, the children did arts and crafts and played games with the sisters. After the talks, certain teams met to discuss specifics for the fundraising dinner. We pray to Our Lady and ask her to continue to bless our Third Order with generosity and docility to the Holy Spirit.

Summer Guyana Mission in Santa Rosa & Charity

In August, five sisters from the Juniorate traveled to Guyana for the first time to participate  in two parish missions.  While the IVE priests and seminarians have made several trips in the past, only with the recent establishment of a convent of sisters in Charity has there been the possibility of receiving a large group of visiting sisters and a number of lay volunteers.  Sisters Mary Ark of the Covenant, Maryam Sub Diloo Ki Malka, Mary Mother of Light, Maria Theotokos and Maria Espejo de Paciencia went for the mission, and Sr. Paciencia stayed on as a permanent new member of the community of sisters in Charity.  We also were blessed to have with us several lay volunteers, three of them are sisters of some of our religious sisters: Juilianna Whiting, Nicole Ganzenmuller, Marlene Araza; as well as Kelly Faltus, a visiting nurse.

Kamwatta, Santa Rosa

The first mission preached by Fr. David Vidal, IVE was held between August 4-11 in Kamwatta, a small village belonging to the mission of Santa Rosa in Moruca (the North West District) along the Pomeroon River.  This town is accessible only by boat and has limited electricity.  The Amerindian people of the region are predominantly Catholic and have maintained both traditional means of construction and farming as well as a warm and very generous cultural tradition.  The mission included children's oratory (games, songs, talks, snack time and crafts), youth group (discussion groups, singing, and preparation of campfire and flowers for Our Lady), home visits to all the village and surrounding islands, as well as the central mission preaching during daily Mass.  It was beautiful to see the large crowds at the 4:00 PM daily Mass and preaching; the community usually only has Mass on two Sundays of the month since the two parish priests must care for over ten chapels.  Every evening the whole town gathered for the traditional "campfire" with controversies on topics of the faith, songs,  dances, and skits.  The youth group performed beautiful songs accompanied by guitar and linked each song to provide unbroken music as the children danced and the adults sang along and clapped.  The mission ended after many Confessions, a Rosary Procession and with the baptism of four infants.  The graciousness and kindness of theses people made a lasting impression on all of the missionaries.

Charity

From August 12-19 the sisters, seminarians, and lay volunteers held a mission in Charity on the Essequibo Coast.  This town has a high school, established businesses, and is accessible both by boat and by car.  Since it is also the center for the "market day" and a trading point for smaller rural communities, it has a far more busy and traditionally Guyanese quality than Kamwatta.  The mixture of West Indians, Guyanese of African descent, and Amerindians who have moved in from the small towns is reflected in the cuisine, music, and religious backgrounds.  It is not uncommon to see prayer flags flown in the front yard of Hindu homes, green star and crescent symbols integrated into the wrought-iron gates of Muslim residences, and rosaries hung from the rafters and front porches of Catholic families.  Most days we ate curry and rice, and often had roti and other Indian foods and flavorings brought to the country by the West Indians who migrated to Guyana in the 1830's as laborers.

The trucks, loud music, and dense population provided a ready mission field and striking back-drop for the daily Rosary Processions lead by the children singing in front, followed by the boys of the youth group carrying the statue of Our Lady, and completed by the parishioners and young people praying the Rosary.  The mission also included the traditional method of daily children's oratory, youth meetings, and mission talks as used in Kamwatta.  The home visits were conducted both on foot and by boat and led by members of the youth group who grew in courage and love for their Catholic identity as they accompanied the missionaries to every home in the neighborhoods--Muslim, Hindu, Protestant or Catholic.

The mission was also marked by the preparations of parents, godparents, and youth for Baptism.  On the last day Fr. David baptized 37 infants, children, and youth--ranging in age from two months to 18 years-old.  Some entire families of 7 children were baptized.  Along with the many Confessions, Holy Communions, and return to prayer, we especially give thanks to God for the abundant graces of the Baptisms.

Returning home, the missionaries continue to pray for the people and parish communities of Guyana as well as the priests and sisters who are living there as their permanent mission.  We give thanks to all those who supported this mission by their financial donations, by the many supplies people gave us for the children, and by their prayers.  May the Lord continue to lead and increase His flock among the Guyanese souls for their salvation and His greater glory.

Foreign Missionaries Visit Our Province

During the summer months we often receive visiting foreign missionaries who come to participate in various Mission Cooperative Plans (MCP) sponsored by the Propaganda of the Faith. The sisters visit parishes on the weekends to increase awareness about missions in the Church and to collect donations for the subsistence of specific projects. Between week-ends we have the opportunity to show the visiting sisters different parts of our Province. This year our missionary sisters came from Egypt, Ecuador, Argentina, and Ukraine (our sister in the black habit belongs to the Byzantine Catholic Rite). Included here are some photos of the visits in New York: St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the tomb of Servant of God Archbishop Fulton Sheen, the Statue of Liberty; as well as a Fourth of July spent in the beautiful farmland of Avondale, Pennsylvania.

POPULAR MISSION IN CANADA

This year from June 16-June 29, sisters and seminarians from the Washington D.C. Formation Houses joined Pastor Daniel Mentessana, IVE and Fr. Hugo Cardenas, IVE  in the annual popular mission in Toronto, Canada.  During the first weekend, we began the mission with an overnight IVE CanadaYouth Festival at a nearby camp ground, where the priests and guest speakers gave talkscorpuscross.jpg on certain Catholic issues.  The young adults also had many chances for recreation, singing, and prayer.  After returning to the parish, we began the popular mission there at St. Augustine of Canterbury Church. Main apostolate included door-to-door visits and activities with the youth in the afternoon.  These youth meetings, or oratories, engaged children and youth alike.  The IVE Third Order community in Canada were also very active by joining in on the house visits, inviting neighbors and friends, and organizing a parish-wide system to provide daily meals for the visiting missionaries.  As always during popular missions, all the missionaries experienced the power of evangelization during these two weeks, whether by assisting a family in need of food or by talking to someone who had never heard the name of Jesus.  We thank God for the fruits of the mission in Canada.

The Corpus Christi Procession

The Annual Corpus Christ Possession was held on August 10, 2007 through the streets of North York (Toronto) Canada, within the boundaries of the Parish of St. Augustine of Canterbury.

Fr. Mentessana, IVE led the procession as a large number of faithful followed, adoring Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, surrounded by a large crucifix of Our Lord and statue of the Sorrowful Mother.

We thank God for all the blessings and graces received.

IVE Summer Camps for Girls and Teens in Up-State New York

The IVE Summer Camp for Girls and Teens  held two sessions for 2007: one for the younger girls from June 8-11 and another for the teenagers from June 15-18. The Girls' Camp based its activities on the theme “Behold your Mother” and had 52 girls participating, while 37 older girls came for the the second adventuresome weekend following the theme “You will be my witnesses.” From praying to playing each group of girls enjoyed a weekend filled with fun in a spirit of fraternal charity and joy. They gathered together in the IVE Retreat House in Upstate New York from Harlem, East New York (Brooklyn), Williamsburg (Brooklyn), Pennsylvania, and Bridgeport, Connecticut. Once there, they separated into groups in order to compete as teams in various activities such as sports, acting, hiking, and swimming. The camp reached its climax at the end when all were awarded for the outstanding virtues demonstrated throughout the days spent together. They truly demonstrated their ability to “celebrate” life as our founder says. Let us ask our Blessed Mother to continue to foster their holy joy which stems from the love and grace God has poured into their souls and so be true witnesses of Christ.

Confirmation 2007

“Come Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit and you shall renew the face of the earth!” A total of 100 students from Our Lady of Peace and Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Thursday June 14, 2007. Our bishop, the Most Reverend Patrick McGraw presided over the Holy Mass at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Santa Clara, California, along with  IVE Fathers Walter Mallo, Fr. Paul Coleman, Fr. Rolando Santoianni, and Fr. Marcelo Navarro as concelebrating priests. During his homily, the bishop recounted his own vocation story and encouraged the confirmandi to never forget that they are loved by God. He also encouraged them to follow God’s will in their own vocations. After the Holy Mass concluded, we gathered in the gym of the Family Learning Center to celebrate with the families of the confirmandi. We pray for the perseverance of our newly confirmed and ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, for the grace to become true warriors for Christ.

Corpus Christi Procession

For the solemnity of Corpus Christi, we had a procession with the Blessed Sacrament after the noon Mass on Sunday June 10th. We began in the church and processed around the Shrine with Eucharistic songs and meditations. During the procession, Father Walter Mallo, IVE stopped at four altars, read Eucharistic meditations, and gave the faithful the benediction. We pray for an increased devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and also for an increase to the number of adorers for Perpetual Adoration.

Dinner with Father Salvador Curutchet, IVE Missionary in the Philippines

To say goodbye to Fr. Salvador and thank him for visiting us, we organized a potluck dinner on Saturday June 9th. There were about fifty people in attendance and brought with them their joy to learn about our mission in the Philippines. Fr. Salvador showed us many pictures of the mission in the Philippines, especially the many children participating in our feeding programs and catechism. At the end of the dinner, many people wanted to help and made plans to continue to remain in contact with Fr. Salvador and the mission in the Philippines. We give thanks for the visit of Fr. Salvador and continue to pray for the mission of our Religious Family in the Philippines.

Last Day of CCD for 2006-2007

The last day of CCD classes was June 8th and to celebrate all the hard work and graces the children received, we had a pizza party. Needless to say all the children were very happy! We thank God for all the graces and benefits He bestowed upon is during this catechetical year and pray for the holiness and perseverance of our students.

Third Solemn Communion and Celebration

It has been a tradition for the past couple years at Our Lady of Peace for the Spanish catechism students to have a Second and Third Solemn Communion for the two Sundays after they receive their First Holy Communion. On June 3rd, about one hundred students were invested with the brown scapular at their Third Solemn Communion, and then we had a big celebration for the families in the gym of the Family Learning Center. We had a Mexican harp player as well as a small show, but the biggest thrill of the party was the raffle in which they could receive prizes. They all were hoping to win one of the two bicycles we had donated for the occasion! We give thanks to the generosity of all the people who made the Third Solemn Communion a truly memorable event, and pray for the holiness of our catechism children.

News from our Third Order in Santa Clara, California: May and June Meetings

MAY MEETING: Viva Mexico!  Our Cinco de Mayo Third Order meeting definitely had a Mexican theme with our dinner entrees and table decorations made of red, white, and green flowers. Many of our Third Order members and families joined us as we presented our Religious Family’s celebration of the Incarnation (Solemnity of the Annunciation) around the world, and heard talks on “Joy and the Resurrection” given by Father Walter Mallo in Spanish and Sister Maria de los Angeles in English. Even the IVE kids had a real spirit of joy as they made Mother’s Day cards and then took turns hitting the piñata! We ask Our Lady to continue to bless our Third Order members and bring them all closer to her Eucharistic Son.

JUNE MEETING: “Docility to the Holy Spirit” was the theme for the June Third Order Meeting for Our Lady of Peace and Saint Leo the Great. On June 2nd, about one hundred Third Order members and friends gathered in the Family Learning Center at Our Lady of Peace for a potluck dinner, news from the province, and formational talks. We had the grace to have Father Salvador Curachet, IVE, a missionary working in the Philippines, visit us and show us some pictures from the mission. After Father’s presentation, Sister Angeles showed pictures from the recent ordinations in Washington, DC, and the IVE Youth Day at Saint Patrick’s. Mother Ana de Jesus and Father Walter Mallo then presented the talks about being docile to the Holy Spirit, while the kids had a great time playing in the gym. We ask Our Lady to continue to bless our Third Order members and grant them the grace to always be faithful to our charism of evangelizing the culture.

IVE Youth Festival in Up-State        New York

During the weekend of May 25th-27th our Religious Family hosted the 6th annual IVE Youth Festival in Up-State New York at St. Patrick's Retreat House.  200 young people came from IVE missions throughout New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Phoenix, Arizona and  Toronto, Canada.

The theme of this  year's Youth Festival was taken from Acts 1:8  The Holy Spirit will come upon you and you will be my witnesses.  This theme was chosen to correspond to the much anticipated World Youth Day in Sydney Australia in the summer of 2008 and was reinforced by our celebration of the Solemnity of Pentecost on Sunday, May 27th.

The weekend included talks, small group discussions, sports, music, entertainment and especially Holy Mass, Adoration, and a candle-lit Rosary Procession. During the weekend there were many opportunities for Confession and consultations.

We thank all of our speakers and all who put in so much time and effort to bring the Youth Festival together. We are especially grateful for the excellent participation and good spirit of  all the youth, and we thank God for the work of the Holy Spirit both seen and unseen.

The weekend of May 5th and 6th was full of many graces as the English speaking children of Our Lady of Peace and Saint Leo the Great received the Eucharist for the first time.  At Our Lady of Peace, there were over 100 children and at Saint Leo the Great, there were over fifty!  Over the next two weekends there will be another 100 English speaking and 200 Spanish speaking children receiving their First Holy Communion.  Please keep all of our first communicants in your prayers as they open their hearts to receive our Eucharistic Lord and all the graces He intends to give them through his most blessed Mother!

Our Lady of Fatima, May 13th

Every year the Juniorate of the Immaculate Heart of Mary celebrates its patroness on May 13th, the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima since this was the Marian apparition in which Our Lady spoke most explicitly about her Immaculate Heart, the mission in the Church and the promise, "In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph." (Apparition of July 13, 1917

As part of the celebration, the "Our Lady's Oratory" group crowned and sang to Mary in honor of her month.  The children learned all about the story of Our Lady of Fatima appearing to young Lucia, Francesco, and Jacinta in 1917 in Fatima, Portugal.

Also in honor of their patroness, the sisters of the Juniorate performed the play, One Flock, One Shepherd, in its English-translation debut.  Written by Sr. Maria de las Virtudes, one of our cloistered contemplative sisters in Italy, the play tells the story of Blessed Maria Elizabeth Hesselblad (1870-1957) who was beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 9, 2000. Blessed Hesselblad was a nurse from Sweden who had been baptized Lutheran and was received into the Catholic Church on August 15, 1902 in Washington, DC.  She led a renewal of the Order of the Most Holy Savior of St. Bridget (the Bridgettines) from the original house of St. Bridget of Sweden (d. 1373) in Rome. She was especially dedicated to the Unity of Christians and succeeded in      Photo Gallery
founding new convents for prayer and retreats throughout Northern Europe, especially in Sweden, a predominantly Protestant country. The habit of the Bridgettines includes a veil marked by the "star of St. Bridget" symbolic of the five wounds of Christ.

Our sisters came from throughout the Province (Connecticut, Brooklyn, Harlem, and the Novitiate) to attend the performance.  The production went very well and the sisters give thanks to God for the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Patroness of the Juniorate, and for the intersession of Blessed Mary Elizabeth Hesselblad.  UT UNUM SINT!

Fr. Carlos Walker

Also the Sisters of the Juniorate were blessed to welcome Fr. Carlos Walker, Vicar General of the Institute of the Incarnate Word, to the convent to celebrate Mass and have dinner with the sisters.  In his homily on the love of Christ and the internal movement of a vocation to religious life, Fr. Walker also encouraged all the sisters to persevere and to embrace holiness.  At dinner, Fr. Walker shared with the sisters news from the missions, plans for the future, and especially an up-date on the activities and projects of Fr. Carlos Buela, our founder and the current General Superior of the Institute of the Incarnate Word who lives in Rome.  We thank God and our Blessed Mother for the very many blessings received.

The Feast of Our Lady of Lujan
May 8th

Our Religious Family held a special Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in the Adoration Chapel in honor of Our Lady of Lujan's patronage as Mother of our Institute throughout the world.  In addition to being the Patroness of Argentina, Our Lady of Lujan has always been the Mother and Guardian of all of the vocations to our Religious Family.  This tradition began with the petition that Fr. Carlos Buela, our founder, made as a seminarian at the Shrine in Lujan for "many consecrated vocations to the Church."

The day was also very special for the Novices who made their consecration to Our Lady according to Saint Louis Grignion de Monfort's Total Consecration to Mary, the foundation of our 4th vow of Marian Slavery fulfilled at the time of religious profession.

It was also a great blessing to have Fr. Carlos Walker, the Vicar General of the Institute of the Incarnate Word, preside over the Mass. The priests, seminarians, novices and sisters all joined in the Holy Mass with prayers of thanksgiving, asking for continued blessings and for an ever greater love for Our Lady as we carry on with the Mission to serve Christ and His Holy Spouse, The Church.

St. Edith Stein Monastery Celebrates Our Lady of Lujan

Our contemplative sisters in Brooklyn celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Luján with prayers especially for the increase and perseverance of  consecrated vocations. "We beg through Mary to our heavenly Father that He sends more workers to His harvest".
Amen!

A "Thank You" Picnic at the Juniorate

Photo Gallery

Sunday May 6th the Immaculate Heart of Mary Juniorate in Washington, DC had a picnic at the convent in thanksgiving to some benefactors, friends and family members who help the sisters throughout the year.  The day was full and in honor of the Month of May, the Month of Mary, we ended with a song to Our Lady.

The event included a BBQ along with plenty of side dishes and desert.  The kids played sports, had an Easter Egg Hunt, and finally gathered to sing to Our Lady, offering her flowers and crowning Her in the garden of the convent.

To end the day everyone went inside to enjoy some singing by the sisters and a few special "acts" done by the kids.  We are grateful for all the support received during the year and thank God for the many graces received.

Fr. Eduardo Chavez, Postulator for the Cause of St. Juan Diego, Visits the Houses of Formation

During the first week of May Fr. Eduardo Chavez, the postulator for the cause of St. Juan Diego, visited Washington, DC to give talks on Our Lady of Guadalupe. He focused especially on the historic background of Catholic Church in Mexico during the 16th century, enumerating the many documents from the time of the apparitions (1531) and those which give historic testimony of the person of St. Juan Diego.  Fr. Chavez gave talks at local parishes, the IVE Fulton Sheen House of Formation, as well as to the Sisters at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Juniorate in Washington, DC who were joined for the talk by the sisters of the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Novitiate.

We thank Fr. Chavez for his time with us and for all his work for the Universal Church. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us! St. Juan Diego, pray for us!

Fulton Sheen House of Formation Hosts Fr. Juan Carlos Sack IVE, Missionary in Tajikistan

The Province of the Immaculate Conception welcomed Fr. Sack during the month of April as he came to give a series of talks on apologetics in our parishes throughout the United States.  To the Houses of Formation in Washington, DC Fr. Sack gave three talks on:  Dominus Iesus a document of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith written in 2000 by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) on the unicity and salvific universality of Jesus Christ and the Church.

Fr. Sack is currently on mission in Tajikistan and came to us with much enthusiasm and many stories from the Central Asia. We thank Fr. Sack for his time and are greatly encouraged by the content of his sessions.  We thank God for the continued guidance of Holy Mother Church and we pray for renewed zeal and dedication to the foreign missions throughout the Church.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY in CALIFORNIA
April 15th, 2007

Like today’s responsorial psalm, “give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love is everlasting,” at Our Lady of Peace and Saint Leo the Great, we have much to be thankful for!

At the 9:30 AM Mass at Saint Leo, two of the adults in our adult sacrament preparation received the Eucharist for the first time. It was a great grace that at last they could receive Our Lord after much preparation and dedication.

At Our Lady of Peace, there were confessions beginning at 1 PM followed by a special Mass of the Divine Mercy at 2:30 PM. The confession lines quickly filled as the priests stationed themselves outside. A visiting priest from Santa Lucia celebrated a beautiful Mass, and joined the procession around the Shrine. We listened to some meditations about the infinite mercy of God before reciting the five parts of the Chaplet. We ended the Chaplet inside the church with Benediction. We pray to Mary, the Mother of Mercy, to continue to convert many hearts to receive the mercy that Our Lord wants to bestow upon us.

FURTHER NEWS from CALIFORNIA

Vocations Week at Campbell Heights Academy
Recently Sister Maria Madre Inmaculada and Sister Mary of the Incarnation visited a local Catholic elementary school for their annual Vocations Week. The day started off with a presentation about vocations for the students from grades 5-8. They listened attentively and asked a lot of questions about religious life and how to become a priest or religious. They then visited each of the classrooms to spend a few minutes talking to the children. The class sizes in the school are very small, and include children from pre-kindergarten up to eighth grade. They were very interested in hearing about the missions and what they could do to help. The most attentive class was the kindergarten girls who all offered themselves to pray one Hail Mary each day for the fruit of the missions. We pray for the fruit of this visit and ask Our Lady to inspire many of the children to answer generously the call to religious life.

Catechist Formation Meeting

The theme for March’s Catechist Formation meeting was “The Psychology of the Child and Adolescent.” Sister Maria de Los Angeles presented for the catechists gathered from Our Lady of Peace and Saint Leo the Great. Taking much of her research from Archbishop Fulton Sheen, she explained the mindset of both the child and adolescent, the value this knowledge, and, subsequently, how to reach them better. We pray for our catechists that through the intercession of Our Lady, that they would continue to be the example of Christ to our children and youth, inspiring them to always grow deeper in their faith.

Day of Recollection

In order to help our RCIC and RCIY students grow in their faith before the Easter Vigil, on March 30th, the catechism program held a mini-retreat for them. Father Walter Mallo, IVE gave the children the main talk about the three sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. He asked them many questions as he explained what each of the sacraments entails. There was also time for games and prayer as these children prepared to be received in into the church. We entrust these little souls to Our Blessed Mother and ask her to enflame in their hearts a true love for God and the Church when they receive their sacraments during the Easter Vigil.

Lenten Play at Our Lady of Peace

“A Story of Mercy” was the Lenten play performed by the catechism students and members of the Regina Pacis home schooling group at Our Lady of Peace. They had two performances: Saturday April 24th and  Sunday April 25, 2007. “A Story of Mercy” is one of the plays written by Sister Maria de las Virtudes, SSVM, who is a cloistered contemplative in Rome. The play focuses on the conversion of Peter, one boy’s father, thanks to the prayers and sacrifices of his son, Anthony, and Anthony’s friend Francis. The hard work of the cast and crew made this year’s Lenten play a huge success! We pray for the fruit of this Lenten season, especially for a true conversion of heart.

Easter Chapel at the Juniorate

Just before Holy Week the Juniorate was blessed to have the Maurer Family from northern Virginia come and repaint the Chapel in preparation for the celebration of our Lord's Resurrection at Easter.

After clearing everything out and a very busy full day's work, the Maurer's and a few of the sisters completed the job.  The chapel was repainted, walls and cracks were mended and everything looked brand new!  The next day statues, Stations of the Cross, painting, the reliquaries, and the tabernacle were all returned to the Chapel and the sisters were able to have Adoration. We all thank God and our Blessed Mother for having answered our prayers for this Lenten project. We are very grateful for the generosity of the Maurer family.
