Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, says that the youth are the future of the Church. With this exhortation in mind the Religious Family of the Institute of the Incarnate Word hosts a Youth Festival each year. The IVE Youth Festival followed the theme that Pope Benedict XVI chose for the Youth Days of 2006 celebrated in the local churches: Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my way (Ps. 119:105).

Over 300 youth attended the IVE Youth Festival held at the St. Patrick’s IVE Retreat House, in Cairo, NY from May 26th to May 28th, 2006. The youth came from the following parishes:

Novices Consecration to Mary - Our Lady of Lujan
Photo Gallery
In our Religious Family, we consecrate ourselves to Mary following the method of Total Consecration by Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort. We make this consecration so that our lives are "…a total surrender to Mary to better serve Jesus Christ…(Const., 82)." The consecration has two aspects: 'Maternal slavery of love' and 'Marianizing life'. In 'Maternal slavery of love' "…we freely and willingly, moved only by love, offer ourselves and all our goods to Mary and through her to Jesus Christ (Const., 83)." In 'Marianizing life' we do everything "through Mary, with Mary, in Mary, and for Mary (Directory of Spirituality, 307)."

On May 8th, 2006, the Feast of Our Lady of Lujan, the patroness of our Religious Family, nine novices made their consecration to Mary at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

May Mary always protect and lead our novices to Christ, the Divine Spouse.

Our Lady's Oratory - Family Day 2006

The Holy Family--Jesus, Mary and Joseph--is the perfect model to show us how we should live as a family. Considering the importance of family, Our Lady’s Oratory held the First Family Day on Saturday, April 29th, for the families and children of the weekly oratory group. The sisters and the seminarians organized the following activities for the families:

  • A talk about the importance of family
  • A play put on by the seminarians to entertain the parents and the children
  • A out-doors lunch together
May Jesus, Mary, and Joseph bless and unite all families!

First Profession of Vows

In Mary's Magnificat, she says, My soul magnifies the Lord...(Lk. 1:46). Mary the perfect model for a Religious consecrated to Christ, shows how in everything she did she gave glory to Christ. So too when a Religious professes her vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, she is espoused to Christ of who radiates through her.

On April 8th, 2006, Sr. Maria del Divino Amore made her First Profession of Vows at St. James Catholic Church in Mount Rainer, MD. The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE Provincial Superior. A reception followed immediately after the Mass, a gathering of friends and family.

Solemnity of the Annunciation

Do not be afraid, Mary…you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus (Lk.1:30). In the announcement of the birth of Jesus, the Angel Gabriel says to Mary to have no fear and that she has been called to bring forth the Son of God.  In 1984, Fr. Carlos Miguel Buela, inspired by the Holy Spirit, founded the Institute of the Incarnate Word, a religious order of missionary priests. Echoing Mary’s response in the Annunciation, the Institute of the Incarnate Word was founded to bring forth the Word of God to all nations trusting in God and going forward without fear.

The Solemnity of the Annunciation marks the 22nd Anniversary of the founding of the Institute of the Incarnate Word. On March 24th, 2006, our Religious Family participated in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass presided by Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Harlem, NY.  A reception was held immediately after the Mass to conclude the celebration with our guests, friends, and family.

Celebration in California - Our Lady of Peace
A celebration was also held in California at Our Lady of Peace. The main celebrant of the Mass was Fr. Walter Mallo and concelebrated by all the IVE priests from Our Lady of Peace, Saint Leo, priests of other religious communities and other diocesan priests. At the Mass, Fr. Paul Coleman renewed his religious vows for one year and the Ladies of the Altar Society presented 5 chasubles and several altar cloths that they had made.  A dinner was held immediately following the Mass at the Family Learning Center where over 350 people attended.

Solemnity of St. Joseph

The Solemnity of St. Joseph, March 20th, 2006, marks the 18th Anniversary of The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará. The Solemnity was celebrated with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass presided by the Archbishop of Washington, Theodore Cardinal McCarrick at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. During the Mass, Sister Mary Mother of Sorrows made her Perpetual Vows of Poverty, Chastity, Obedience, and our Fourth Vow of Total Consecration to Mary.  As part of the ceremony, she prostrated on the floor during the singing of the Litany of the Saints, received her gold wedding band from the hands of Cardinal McCarrick, and was crowned with flowers as symbol of her Espousal with Jesus Christ.  Sisters Maria Ina Namin and Maria Jerosolimitana renewed their Temporary Vows and a novice received her habit and her new religious name: Sister Mary Virgin of Humility.  The celebration concluded with a reception at St. John Baptist de La Salle Catholic Church in Chillum, MD.

Trip to Guyana

Mother Mary Mother of Mercy McDunnough, our Provincial Superior, and Mother Maria de la Caridad traveled to Guyana from March 3 to March 11, 2006 to visit the places where our sisters plan to found a new mission in September. The trip included the towns of Charity and Santa Rosa where the Priests of the Incarnate Word have missions. The Mothers visited schools, a lunch program run by the Fathers, a home for boys started by the Fathers, and some of the many churches and chapels.  This trip gave the Mothers an opportunity to meet the people of Guyana, to become familiar with the culture and way of life, and to determine what needs to be done in order to start this exciting new foundation.

As part of our intellectual formation we "...study philosophy, which leads to a deeper understanding and interpretation of the person, and of the person's freedom and relationships with the world and with God (Pastores Dabo Vobis, 52)." March for Life 2006
Photo Gallery
"For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy" (Lk. 1:44). In the gospel of Luke, Mary the Mother of God goes to visit Elizabeth and at the sound of Mary's voice, the baby in Elizabeth's womb leaped for joy. From the moment of conception, life is formed in a mother's womb. Every year since the 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade that made abortion legal, people have been gathering on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to voice their opposition to abortion and to pray that one day this precedent will be overturned. This year the March for Life was held in Washington, D.C. on Monday, January 23rd, 2006. Our Religious Family brought youth from our parishes to participate in the March and to join the 25,000 other young people in the Youth Mass held at the MCI Center. We then joined the other marchers in prayer and song from the White House to the Supreme Court.  Please join us to pray and be a voice for the cry to the unborn.

The Religious Family of the Incarnate Word welcomed over 300 youth and adults from all around the United States and Canada to join us in the March for Life. This included:

  • St. James Catholic Church, Mount Rainer, MD
  • Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Santa Clara, CA
  • St. Gabriel's Parish Catholic Church, Brooklyn, NY
  • St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Brooklyn, NY
  • Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Brooklyn, NY
  • St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Bronx, NY
  • St. Paul's Catholic Church, Harlem, NY
  • St. George Catholic Church, Bridgeport, CT
  • St. Veronica's Catholic Church, Philadelphia, PA
  • Misíon Santa Maria, Avondale, PA
  • St. Augustine Catholic Church, Toronto, Canada

First Profession of Vows in Italy

On October 15, 2005 two of our American novices who are studying in Italy made their first vows: Sr. Mary of Merciful Love (Arkansas) and Sr. Maria Esperanza de la Iglesia (Maryland). Monsignor Erba presided at the Mass and many of the Priests of the Institute of the Incarnate Word concelebrated, including our founder, Fr. Carlos Buela. Also, our first novice from Albania and the third sister from Russia professed their first vows. Our Spanish novice professed her vows in a ceremony in Spain. We congratulate all of these new professed sisters!

World Youth Day Pilgrimage 2005

One hundred and fifty youth and religious, including eight Incarnate Word priests, set out for Rome, Italy at the beginning of the month of August in preparation for the 20th World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany.  After a pilgrimage through Italy, our pilgrims participated in the opening Mass for the World Youth Day in Cologne's stadium, and greeted the Holy Father from the banks of the Rhine River as he passed by on boat.  We also participated in the activities in Marienfeld, including the Vigil with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament by the Holy Father, and the culminating Mass of the 20th World Youth Day.
